Anime of Fairy Tail Zero prequel manga to premiere in January

The 52nd volume of the Fairy Tail manga and the compiled volume of Fairy Tail Zero, both by the franchise’s original creator Hiro Mashima, were released on Tuesday with wrap-around jacket bands announcing that a Fairy Tail Zero anime is in the works.

With the reveal, it was also stated that more details will be announced on the Fairy Tail anime’s official website in the near future.

Kodansha Comics, who have licensed the Fairy Tail Zero manga for a North American release in summer 2016, describe it as follows:

This is it: The Fairy Tail prequel fans have been waiting for! Series creator Hiro Mashima himself draws an all-new series that depicts the founding of the Fairy Tail guild.

Many years ago, Mavis Vermilion was a servant on Sirius Island, mistreated by a guild master and his daughter, Zera. But Mavis stayed positive, because her mother once told her that fairies never visit people who cry about their problems. When the guild came under attack, Mavis pulled Zera from the wreckage into the forest. Seven years went by, and the powerful wizards Warrod Sequen, Precht, and Yuri Dreyer arrived on the island, seeking a powerful jade gemstone. This journey would change the course of magical history…

While a release for the Zero manga outside of North America hasn’t been confirmed yet, Crunchyroll have been releasing new chapters of the Fairy Tail manga as a simulpublication and keeping up with the mainline anime. We’re keeping our fingers crossed that they will at least license the prequel anime for simulcast streaming in January.
