Today at the Madogatari event, splicing SHAFT’s crowning series Puella Magi Madoka Magica and Monogatari to celebrate the studio’s 40th anniversary, a short “Madoka concept movie” will be unveiled, alluding to a new story from the Madoka Magica universe.
Though exactly what this new project will entail is still under wraps, it is known that since the release of the movies, the Magica Quartet made up of director Akiyuki Shinbo, character designer Ume Aoki, scriptwriter Gen Urobuchi and studio SHAFT have continued meeting, and that Shinbo has storyboarded the new concept movie in that time.
Yuki Kajiura also returned to compose a new piece of music for the short film, working alongside the Puella Magi animation staff. Even the main cast came in to record new lines, with all the magical girls present including Kaori Mizuhashi as Mami, and Kyubey and Nagisa Momoe’s voice actors Emiri Katō and Kana Asumi pitching in too.
Whatever the new project is, the whole team seem to feel passionately about it, so I think it’s time for us Madoka fans to get excited for future plans.
