Michael Gracey joins Shinobi Alliance as director of US Naruto movie

Believe it, for better or worse, Naruto is getting a movie adaptation by US studio Lionsgate, and it’s now signed its director. Michael Gracey, who was in talks about coming on board for this adaptation since its first announcement, previously specialised in visual effects, but is now credited as director for the Elton John biopic Rocketman, an adaptation of Roald Dahl’s The Witches and several other movies.

Avi Arad, who is also producing Hollywood’s Ghost in the Shell, is on the team with his son Ari Arad through Arad Productions, with Erik Feig, Geoff Shaveitz and Kelly O’Malley overseeing proceedings. At the moment, Lionsgate is in negotiations for the film rights to Masashi Kishimoto’s original manga, and assuming they’ll be secured, we’ll just have to see how they handle our favourite irreverent ramen-scoffing ninja.
