This Friday, Hakusensha’s Young Animal magazine will announce that Puella Magi Madoka Magica and Bakemonogatari’s Akiyuki Shinbo is directing the anime adaptation of March comes in like a lion, the manga by Chika Umino that first made Young Animal its home in 2007. Of course, studio SHAFT will be taking up the task of animating the production, and it will premiere on NHK.
Umino, who also drew the much-beloved Honey & Clover manga, won 2011’s Manga Taisho and Kodansha Manga awards, and the Grand Prize in 2014’s Tezuka Osamu Prizes among others for her latest ongoing series. Its 11th collected volume was released by Hakusensha last September, and it follows the tranquil life of a shōgi player named Rei as he comes to know the family who are his neighbours.
As well as the anime series, March comes in like a lion is being made as a live-action movie, and both were announced in Young Animal’s 19th issue of last year, on September 25th.
