The everlasting battle between light and dark continues in mystic Japan, with the massively multiplayer online role-playing game Onigiri from Cyberstep bringing the fight to this spring season’s anime. And now, the adaptation’s official website has announced the day we’ll be able to see this animated fantasy world, and the staff at the helm.
The series will premiere on April 7th at 1:00am on Tokyo MX and BS Fujion, and Takashi Yamamoto of Final Approach is directing at Pierrot Plus, the studio known for Beelzebub. Takamitsu Kouno of Utawarerumono: The False Faces is handling series composition with Takashi Aoshima of Himouto! Umaru-chan, and Ojisan to Marshmallow’s Atsushi Oka joins to collaborate on the scripts.
As for the animation and design aspects, Yukiko Ibe, who worked on Nanatsuiro Drops with director Yamamoto, is chief animation director as well as being in charge of character design. Satoshi Shibata of Rainbow Days is serving as art director and background artist, while Junko Tsukidate of Lady Jewelpet handles colour design, and Kazutoshi Azuma of Isuca is on prop design. Finally, on sound production, Zack Production joins the team.
You can form an idea of the story the anime will follow from Cyberstep’s own description of their MMO:
Onigiri thrusts its players into mystical Japan, a land filled with mythical creatures of Japanese legend. Starting as a lone Oni, players fight against the malevolent influence of the Kamikui as their miasma spreads over the land. 8 NPCS, each with their own distinct personality and skills, ally themselves with the player to help build a legend, and quell the evil that has arisen. As you grow stronger together, so do the bonds binding you to each other.
