Ghibli’s co-produced feature The Red Turtle may be a long way off yet, but in the meantime the studio’s let its magic touch land on a 12th century picture scroll. The scrolls themselves, called Choju Jinbutsu Giga, are considered the earliest example of Japanese manga, and their frolicking inkwork animals are brought to life in this 30-second anime.

This charming, tiny toon was commissioned by the Japanese energy company Marubeni Shin Denryoku, who sought to highlight ecological issues the modern world can find transient and forgettable with Studio Ghibli’s help.
