Aniplex of America were quick on the draw with an English trailer for Sword Art Online the Movie -Ordinal Scale-, after Japan’s original trailer was released region-locked. Set after the anime’s last arc ‘Mother’s Rosario’, the light novel author Reki Kawahara writes an all-new story for “Ordinal Scale”, the game released following the “Sword Art Online” and “Gun Gale Online” MMOs.
The game uses a new augmented reality device called “Augma”, and the English website opened for the movie describes the device as follows:
A next-generation, wearable multi-device that looks like a pair of small headphones. In terms of size and portability, it is far superior to the existing VR machine “Amusphere.” Augma doesn’t have a full-dive function, however, its AR function is greatly enhanced to compensate for it. It can transmit visual, audio and tactual sensation data to players while they are awake, thus enabling the users to enjoy fitness and health management like a game.
The site also describes the “Ordinal Scale” game itself:
“Ordinal Scale,” an ARMMO-RPG that was designed exclusively for “Augma.” Following its release, it has become the most discussed game due to its advanced technology. In this game, players can raise their rank by collecting items that appear in various places in the real world and by defeating monsters. This “Ranking System” is the main feature of the game, and in this system, each player’s status is determined by their rank which is indicated by an ordinal number instead of a cardinal number. As the result, high ranking players are given overwhelming power and often rank has become a major factor in deciding the outcome of a PvP battle.
As well as revealing abec’s character designs for Kirito and Asuna, made over in their “Original Scale” outfits, it’s been confirmed that Yoshitsugu Matsuoka and Haruka Tomatsu will return to play their respective characters. The English website states that the movie is coming to cinemas, though presumably for the US only, in 2017 along with Japan’s release.
Tomohiko Ito is back as director at A-1 Pictures, after gesturing towards Marvel as a hint for this movie’s plot. With Shingo Adachi returning to adapt abec’s original character designs, Yuki Kajiura also returns to score the music.
Update: At Sakura-Con 2016, which was held over the weekend at the Washington State Convention Center and welcomed guests including Sword Art Online‘s author Reki Kawahara and original character designer abec, the Ordinal Scale movie’s newest visual was unveiled.
