News: The best of anime, manga and gaming’s April Fool’s Day celebrations

It’s springtime, and that can only mean one thing – April Fool’s jokes as plentiful as the blooming cherry blossoms. Anime, manga and video game teams alike pitched in to join the fun, and we’ve rounded up a few of the highlights for you.

Rory climbed to the top of the character popularity poll, and her prize is her own magical girl spin-off anime Magical Girl Love Warrior Rory Mercury. This video will only be up for a limited time, to be taken down after April 1st, Japan time.

Godzilla Resurgence

The movie’s official website shows the lizard King of Kaiju clashing with EVA Unit-01. But the play on Evangelion’s Hideaki Anno as co-director of Godzilla Resurgence is more than just a joke. It’s also officially a line of merchandise to be sold by Groove Garage in June in Japan.

And there’s another Fate foray, on foreign turf this time, as Saber-san takes over the Osomatsu-san website. Links have also appeared to Puella Magi Kiritsugu Magica, EiColle (eiyu is the Japanese for “hero”), and Katatsuki Ranbu (Katatsuki is an alternate name for Type-Moon).

Hatsune Miku

Miku’s next tour will take place in space, when she’ll be visiting all the planets of our solar system in 2039, and Crypton Media met this announcement with the reveal of a Vocaloid version of Miku’s creator, Hiroyuki Ito.  The site has gone into great detail describing the fictional tour’s equally fictional merch, including lightsaber pen lights, Miku helmets, oxygen tanks and space suits, and you can even listen to the tour’s theme song on the webpage.

Super Sonico

The Nitro+ idol mascot turns ten…months, that is. Her website has updated with some sweet baby pictures of little Sonico, a birth certificate and a wallpaper, and Dengeki Online posted an article saying that a fanbook and figure of the “youngest gravure model” are on the way.

Meanwhile, in Sword Art Online, the mobile game has a change of tact and ramps up the romance.
