One of our home-grown J-culture events, the Hyper Japan festival, has just announced a very special guest. Azumi Inoue is doubtless close to many of our hearts, as she’s known for singing the song ‘My Neighbour Totoro’, which ends the Miyazaki movie of the same name, that heartwrenching ending theme from Laputa, ‘Carrying You’, and others from Studio Ghibli’s magical movies.
Inoue will perform at Hyper Japan from July 15th-17th at Olympia, London, and you can read on for more from the festival’s announcement.
Making her debut in 1983, Azumi Inoue first gained notice as the singer of the end theme for Hayao Miyazaki’s Studio Ghibli animation movie, Laputa: Castle in the Sky with “Carrying You”. Performing as a singer on many early Studio Ghibli movies, she is known for such favourites as the opening and end themes for My Neighbor Totoro: “Stroll” and “My Neighbor Totoro” ; and incidental music for Kiki’s Delivery Service: “Changing Seasons” and “Maho No Nukumori” [from the Kiki’s Delivery Service album.]. In addition to movie theme songs, she has also performed theme songs for local authorities, classic songs from school textbooks, as well as the official theme song for Peter Rabbit. Her voice and music is loved by people from all generations.
