Tales from Earthsea director’s anime Ronja the Robber’s Daughter wins International Emmy award

The winners of the International Emmy Kids Awards were announced by the International Academy of Arts and Sciences on Tuesday, and in the Animation category, the Ghibli director Goro Miyazaki and POLYGON PICTURES’ anime series Ronja the Robber’s Daughter came out on top. Shimajiro’s WOW! (Shimajiro no Wow!) was also nominated in the Preschool category, but got pipped to the post by the CBeebies animated children’s series Bing.

The Ronja the Robber’s Daughter anime adapts a children’s book of the same name by the Swedish author of Pippi Longstocking, Astrid Lindgren. Ronja is the bandit chief Mattis’ only daughter, and living together with him in a castle in the forest, she studies the ways of the mysterious creatures that live all around them.

Animated in 3D CG in collaboration with Studio Ghibli, Sanzoku no Musume Ronja first aired in Japan in October 2014 and ran for 26 episodes. UK-based distributors Serious Lunch acquired the worldwide rights to the series last year, and announced in June that they’re on the lookout for English-language broadcasters.
