Paramount and DreamWorks have revealed a few more of their Ghost in the Shell film’s cast and staff, including Chocolat‘s Juliette Binoche as Dr. Ouelet, and cinematographer Jess Hall of The Speculator Now. Kaori Momoi of Memoirs of a Geisha also has an unspecified role, and joining her are five additional members of Section 9: Chin Han of Independence Day: Resurgence, Danusia Samal of Tyrant, Lasarus Ratuere of Terra Nova, Yutaka Izumihara of Unbroken, and Tuwanda Manyimo of The Rover.
The staff also include editor Neil Smith, rejoining director Rupert Sanders from Snow White and the Huntsman, and production designer Jan Roelfs from Fast & Furious 6. Finally, there are the costume designers Kurt Swanson and Bart Mueller, who also worked together on The Hunger Games: Mockingjay.
The studios backed up their first image of Scarlett Johansson in her lead role with a new synopsis which refers to her for the first time as “the Major”:
Based on the internationally-acclaimed sci-fi property, Ghost in the Shell follows the Major, a special ops, one-of-a-kind human-cyborg hybrid, who leads the elite task force Section 9. Devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists, Section 9 is faced with an enemy whose singular goal is to wipe out Hanka Robotic’s advancements in cyber technology.
The Hollywood Reporter also relayed the news that principal photography is still ongoing, with a view to the film’s planned American release on March 31st, 2017. With the latest draft of the script written by Straight Outta Compton‘s Jonathan Herman, production is being handled by the US Naruto movie’s Avi Arad alongside Steven Paul, and Michael Costigan, Jeffrey Silver, Tetsu Fujimura and Mitsuhisa Ishikawa are executive producing.
