News: Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress takes on anime’s first credited makeup artist

WIT Studio has set itself apart from the crowd once again with their zombie steampunk series Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress, but this time the difference falls in the credits rather than the content, as the team welcomes anime’s first ever fully credited Chief Makeup Animator, Sachiko Matsumoto. She has previously worked on WIT’s Hozuki no Reitetsu anime, as well as Production I.G’s Guilty Crown and Ghost in the Shell ARISE, so although this isn’t the first time such a role has been taken on in anime, it’s the first time it’s been recognised with such prominence.

Animate Times has profiled Matsumoto and her role in Kabaneri, which utilises software called VPaint Animation in a new stage in the anime’s production. The softer brush and pencil textures allow her to further refine the original character designs by Haruhiko Mikimoto, known for her work on Macross and Gundam 0080, and the final product brings nuance to characters’ emotional expression, as well as depth of detail to the face and hair textures.
