Our home release of Ghibli’s possibly final movie When Marnie Was There has been listed on the Anime-On-Line UK store, with the slated shipping date of October 3rd this year. Optimum, who have handled many previous Studio Ghibli titles, will carry the movie as a deluxe CD Blu-ray edition, a combo edition and a DVD-only edition, and while the presence or absence of extras hasn’t been confirmed, we do know that all releases will be bilingual, including the English and original Japanese dubs.
We will be seeing Marnie in cinemas in the UK from June 10th, and StudioCanal’s Studio Ghibli Forever celebration frames a Ghibli movie bonanza around its premiere. It so happens that the 1967 young adult novel by English author Joan G. Robinson has received “an international sales boost” thanks to the movie’s release, as the Bookseller magazine reports. The rights to the story set in Norfolk, and shifted to Hokkaido’s shores for the Ghibli production, were sold to the studio in spring 2012. Since then, the book’s translation rights have been sold to ten countries, including Japan, China, Spain and Italy, while it’s also been re-released on home turf by British publishers HarperCollins Children’s Books.
