TMS Entertainment have revealed their studio’s new anime, given the title Trickster – Edogawa Rampo ‘Shonen Tantei-dan’ Yori, and based on the Boy Detectives Club by mystery novelist Edogawa Rampo, who took his penname from American gothic author Edgar Allen Poe. The promo video they released to announce the series, which will air in October featuring character designs by Rozen Maiden and Shugo Chara!‘s Peach-Pit, announces the rest of the staff and its lead voice cast.
The anime has been given a main visual which reads, “He searches for a case where he can die.” Daiki Yamashita plays Yoshio Kobayashi (pictured below, left), and Ryota Ohsaka plays Kensuke Hanazaki (below, right), as part of the project which will also include a stage play, a live-action film, and a manga by Mantohihi Binta, the latter of which will launch in Kodansha’s Magazine Special on June 20th.
The anime is directed by Masahiro Mukai of Hyperdimension Neptunia, with Erika Yoshida of Tiger & Bunny: The Comic writing and supervising scripts. Shinya Yamada, who has worked on the key animation for Attack on Titan and Your lie in April, adapts Peach-Pit’s original character designs for animation, and Yuki Hayashi of Kiznaiver is composing music for the score.
The project’s official site describes the story of Trickster, based on Rampo’s 1937 The Boy Detectives Club novel and subsequent series:
It is the 2030s. The Boy Detectives Club gathers under Kogoro Akechi, the mysterious detective. The group solves cases great and small using their unique skills. One day, a member of the club, Kensuke Hanazaki, meets the boy Yoshio Kobayashi. Kobayashi’s body cannot die due to the effects of the “Unidentifiable Mist,” but he yearns for death, and shirks from contact with other people. Taking an interest in him, Hanazaki invites him to join the Boy Detectives Club. Their meeting is connected to the fate tying together Kogoro Akechi, and the era’s greatest villain, the Fiend With Twenty Faces.
