News: Read or Die series’ final novel teased for release after ten year hiatus

Shueisha’s light novel label Super Dash Bunko have tweeted what seems like a hint at the return of Hideyuki Kurata’s Read or Die series. The latest book in the library espionage series was released on February 24th, 2006, and the next, if it is indeed being published, will be the 12th and most likely the last.

The tweet’s text translates: “We’ve received the 1st draft of a work. A new book after about 10 years. This time it’s not a lie. – Editorial Staff K”. And the first line on the pictured manuscript reads “Watashi wa hon o aishiteru”; in other words “I love books.” These could easily be the words of the light novels’ main character Yomiko Readman, codename “The Paper”, a super-powered special ops agent of the British Library determined to keep the peace in the literary world.

The light novels were adapted as a manga, written by Kurata and illustrated by Shutaro Yamada, for Ultra Jump magazine from 2000-2005. After being made into a three-part OVA in 2001, a 26-episode anime R.O.D the TV was produced by J.C.Staff and aired in 2003.
