Looking forward to this week’s release of the 1980s Voltron reimagining Voltron: Legendary Defender, the DreamWorks TV YouTube channel is now streaming a preview and clips of the defenders of the galaxy’s mecha derring-do. The series premieres on Netflix this Friday, June 10th, and the streaming service released the show’s full trailer last month.
With the Legend of Korra team of executive producers, Joaquim Dos Santos and Lauren Montgomery, running the show beside writer Tim Hedrick, Voltron: Legendary Defender is animated by Korra’s Studio Mir, bringing the core team back under their old banner. The DreamWorks show’s main characters, with the leading team pictured below as revealed by Nerdist, have been cast as follows:
Steven Yeun (The Walking Dead) as Keith
Jeremy Shada (Adventure Time) as Lance
Bex Taylor-Klaus (Arrow) as Pidge
Josh Keaton (Green Lantern: The Animated Series) as Shiro
Tyler Labine (Tucker and Dale vs. Evil) as Hunk
Kimberly Brooks (Mass Effect) as Princess Allura
Rhys Darby (Flight of the Conchords) as Coran
Neil Kaplan (Transformers: Robots in Disguise) as King Zarkon
The character known as Shiro in this series returns from the first Voltron, in which he was named Sven. He, in turn, was adapted from the character of Takashi Shirogane in King of Beasts GoLion when this show was reinterpreted as Voltron. Shiro and his friends Keith, Lance, Hunk and Pidge set out to defend Arus from King Zarkon’s alien forces, and this series, unlike the original, is priding itself on giving all of its characters backstories and their own individual reasons for taking on the mission. Princess Allura, Montgomery also promised, will also be more realistic in her role and “certainly not fainting at every little thing that overwhelms her.”
Update: On Monday (June 6th), DreamWorks added a new clip previewing Voltron: Legendary Defender. This time, it’s Shiro vs. the bat-eared and beastly baddie Sendak.
