Today the official website for the anime branch of the Digimon Universe: Appli Monsters multimedia project revealed the anime’s cast and staff, as well as unveiling two promo videos. While one gives us our first look at the anime, the other previews the 3DS card game that was also hinted at in previous announcements.
The site now gives the following extended series synopsis, as well as an updated visual which shows the protagonist with his Digivice and a few new Digimon:
Everyone in the world uses smartphone apps. But inside them lurks unknown creatures called “Appli Monsters,” or “Appmon.” The Appmon are AI lifeforms with the ability to think and act, and exist in the boundary between the human world and digital space to allow people and the system to interface and function. But in the vast sea of the internet, the “last boss AI” Leviathan takes control of the Appmon with a virus and begins hacking every system, thus starting to control the human world from the world of the net.
The protagonist, Haru Shinkai, is led to acquire the Appli Drive, and uses it to materialize Gacchimon, a search app monster. What is the secret hidden within the Appli Drive? What is the mysterious field that exists between net world where the Appmon exist, and the real world? What is the “App Combine” that can combine two Appmons? What is Leviathan’s true goal?
The cast are also listed and pictured beside their characters as follows:
Yumi Uchiyama (Bakuon!!‘s Onsa Amano) as Haru Shinkai
Kokoro Kikuchi (Boruto – Naruto the Movie‘s Sarada Uchiha) as Gacchimon
Wataru Takagi (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond Is Unbreakable‘s Okuyasu Nijimura) as the Appli Drive
The anime will premiere on TV Tokyo in October, with Gou Koga of DokiDoki! PreCure and One Piece Episode of Sabo directing at Toei Animation. Yoichi Kato, also of DokiDoki! PreCure and more recently Yo-kai Watch, supervises scripts while Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans‘ Kenichi Ohnuki designs the characters.
Update: With yesterday’s unveiling of the Digimon Universe: Appli Monsters project at the International Tokyo Toy Show, it was revealed that the anime is just the basis of a whole slew of games and toys. Besides the Appli Monsters: Cyber Arena 3DS eShop game, whose Appmon Chip QR code scan-and-battle function is previewed in the PV above, a more expansive 3DS game will get a physical release in the near future. Of course, there will also be an app, and the Appmon Chips and Appli Drive Digivice toy needed to play the digital game are due out alongside the anime in October.
