Hello Kitty, perhaps the most widely recognised kawaii character, created by Yuko Yamaguchi as one of Sanrio’s mascot menagerie, now has her first café in Europe open for business from this week. Pink iced cakes and strawberries abound in the basement of the Soho bakery Cutter & Squidge, who have crafted their interiors to look like a secret garden for the pop-up tea rooms.
For three months, the Hello Kitty Café will offer a menu of afternoon teas, the selection including cheese scones with red pepper relish, coronation crackers, apple pie mousse, vanilla cookies and ice cream. The bakery also serves biscuits and cakes inspired by Hello Kitty’s favourite treats, while selling recipe books and tote bags for customers to bring the cuteness home.
Cutter & Squidge’s co-owner Annabel Lui said “We are beyond excited to be the first European café to host this beloved character – our only worry is that the range will be too cute to eat!”
