At first there were only some threadbare rumours of a live-action Gintama film to go on, but now they’re seeming increasingly credible, as Shonen Jump have teased a big announcement for Hideaki Sorachi’s manga, closely followed by the discovered listing of a GinTama-Film.com domain under Warner Bros.’ name. As anyone can register a domain before they undergo authenticity checks, however, this still isn’t irrefutable proof of it going ahead. We’ll have to wait a couple of weeks to know for certain, as Jump have the big reveal pinned for its July 4th issue.
This Monday’s (June 27th) issue of the magazine will also announce that Koro-sensei Quest, Kizuku Watanabe and Jo Aoto’s spin-off of Yusei Matsui’s Assassination Classroom, will have an “important announcement” in the same July 4th issue. This latter reveal will coincide with the release of the sword and sorcery spoof series’ first compiled volume.
Sorachi’s Gintama has been ongoing in Shonen Jump since 2006, and is now approaching its final arc. However, Sorachi has said he doesn’t yet know whether the manga will end this year or next. The manga’s anime adaptation reached its 10th anniversary this year, and also came to an end in March. But the last episode left fans hopeful, with a hint that it wouldn’t be the last we’ll see of Gintoki and co.
