The film’s official website also revealed new cast with their character designs, making seven additions to the previously announced leads, Osomatsu-san‘s Miyu Irino as Shoya and Snow White with the Red Hair‘s Saori Hayami as Shoko.

Aoi Yuki (ERASED‘s Kayo Hinazuki) as Yuzuru Nishiya

K-ON!‘s Naoko Yamada directs while Reiko Yoshida, also of K-ON!, writes the script, and Free!‘s Futoshi Nishiya is in charge of character design. The film will open in Japan on September 17th, and advance tickets went on sale on June 4th with the added bonus of a clear file drawn by Nishiya.

Oima’s A Silent Voice began as a 2011 one-shot in Kodansha’s Bessatsu Shonen Magazine, but was then made into a full series in the flagship Shonen Magazine in August 2013. Crunchyroll ran an English simulpublication of the series, and after the last chapter ran in November 2014, Kodansha Comics published the seventh and final compiled volume in North America. They give the story the following summary:

Shoya is a bully. When Shoko, a girl who can’t hear, enters his elementary school class, she becomes their favorite target, and Shoya and his friends goad each other into devising new tortures for her. But the children’s cruelty goes too far. Shoko is forced to leave the school, and Shoya ends up shouldering all the blame. Six years later, the two meet again. Can Shoya make up for his past mistakes, or is it too late?
