Today (August 5th) Kodansha’s Itan magazine, the home of Haruko Kumota’s Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju manga up until June 7th this year, announced that the anime adaptation’s second season Sukeroku Futatabi-hen (Sukeroku Anew arc) will premiere in January 2017. In addition, it was revealed that the manga’s 10th and final volume, slated for September 7th, will bundle a brand new story. 20 extra pages will tell a tale of when Konatsu and Yakumo were young and living together, included as a pamphlet in the volume’s limited edition, as well as character designs by Kumota for the show’s new season.
We were gripped by the tragic history of Kikuhiko and Sukeroku (whose beloved rakugo traditions and transformations we explored for ourselves), but it seems their story isn’t quite over yet. Akira Ishida and Koichi Yamadera have both been confirmed as reprising their respective roles, as the second season moves into the modern era.
