Bleach to announce live-action movie with final manga chapter

Last week on August 8th, Shonen Jump‘s 36-37 double issue held the climactic chapter of Bleach as planned. But it was also announced that issue 38 would contain a post-climax chapter, accompanied by an “important announcement”. While fans expected that this would mean a return to the anime, which ended in 2012, a sneak peek at next week’s issue has proved the franchise will take a different direction, in the form of its first live-action movie.

This next adaptation of Tite Kubo’s manga is scheduled for 2018, and there’s already a chosen one in place for the role of Ichigo Kurosaki. Sota Fukushi, who played the live-action Library Wars‘ Hikaru Tezuka, will portray the strawberry blonde warrior, with  Shinsuke Sato of the live-action Gantz and Gantz II: Perfect Answer films directing.

Kubo launched his slick flagship in Jump in 2001, where it’s remained running ever since, and embarked on its final arc in February 2012. In its time, Bleach has inspired 366 anime episodes in a series stretching from 2004 to 2012, besides a slew of films, novels, video games, and the beloved Rock Musicals which make a triumphant return this summertime.

We’re excited to hear where Bleach‘s first ever live-action film will take the series, those story details hopefully due for their own reveal soon. But what are your thoughts? What do you think would make a great Bleach live-action?
