The staff of the Uchu Senkan Yamato 2202: Ai no Senshi-tachi (Space Battleship Yamato 2202: Warriors of Love or Star Blazers 2202: Warriors of Love) anime sequel project revealed during a livestream presentation on Monday (September 5th) that the series is set to be a seven-part theatrical anime project. The first part of the follow-up to the 2012 Space Battleship Yamato remake, Space Battleship Yamato 2199, will open in Japan for a 2-week limited run in 15 cinemas starting February 25th, 2017. The limited edition Blu-ray will go on sale the same day, and wider digital and disc releases will follow in March.

The above teaser trailer was unveiled as part of the presentation, during which Daisuke Ono and Hoko Kuwashima appeared on stage. They then made the announcement that they would be reprising their Space Battleship Yamato 2199 roles as Susumu Kodai and Yuki Mori, respectively.

Nobuyoshi Habara of Fafner and Fafner EXODUS is directing the show, with Harutoshi Fukui of Harlock: Space Pirate writing and overseeing scripts. The franchise’s late creator Yoshinobu Nishizaki is credited with the original work, while his son Shoji Nishizaki, who produced Space Battleship Yamato Resurrection, steps up on the team as executive producer.

Joining the team is Resurrection and 2199 mech designer Makoto Kobayashi as assistant director, with 2199‘s Junichiro Tamamori and Yasushi Ishizu once again taking on mechanical design. Nobuteru Yuki is also back on character designer from 2199, and Akira Miyagawa returns to compose the music.
