The stars of the upcoming live-action Gintama movie, Shun Oguri, Masaki Suda and Kanna Hashimoto, have all finished filming for their respective roles as Gintoki, Shinpachi and Kagura. Director Yuichi Fukuda, previously of the HK/Hentai Kamen film, tweeted on Tuesday (September 6th) that Oguri had wrapped his scenes on September 4th, then shortly behind him was Hashimoto on August 27th, who left a bittersweet farewell message. Before that, Suda celebrated his own wrap date on August 24th with a picture of Fukuda, who responded the next day with his own photo of Suda.
The original manga’s author Hideaki Sorachi visited the set three days before Oguri finished filming to celebrate the milestone. Sorachi left the actor with a coloured piece of paper which read, “To Gin Oguri-san, thank you for running Yorozuya for two months. You have already become Gintoki Sakata, my important money tree. So just give me 800 billion yen (Yu Yamada is also fine).” Yu Yamada is Oguri’s wife, whom he married in March 2012 and has done some occasional voice acting work, portraying Yukari “Caroline” Hayasaka in Paradise Kiss.
The film will open in Japan in 2017. Meanwhile, Sorachi’s 2004 ongoing manga is approaching its final arc. However, Sorachi has said he doesn’t yet know whether the manga will end this year or next. The 2006 anime adaptation reached its 10th anniversary this year, and also came to an end in March. But the last episode left fans hopeful, with a hint that it wouldn’t be the last we’ll see of Gintoki and co.
