Shonen Jump magazine’s August 29th issue announced that the third season of Haikyu!!, given its full title Haikyu!! Karasuno Koko vs Shiratorizawa Gakuen Koko (Karasuno High vs Shiratorizawa Academy) would premiere on October 7th. This news has now been followed up with Sunday’s (September 11th) third trailer for the series, revealing and previewing its opening theme ‘Hikariare’ by Burnout Syndromes.
Back in July, the magazine revealed seven new cast, all of them members of the Shiratorizawa volleyball team. It was also confirmed that Ryota Takeuchi would be returning to voice Shiratorizawa’s captain and ace, Wakatoshi Ushijima. Also in August, a Nico webcast revealed a new promo video for the series, introducing us to Karasuno’s forbidding adversaries.
All staff are once again returning from the first two seasons, so Susumu Mitsunaka is back directing at Production I.G, alongside assistant director and Gintama key animator Mariko Ishikawa, with Taku Kishimoto of ERASED handling series composition. Takahiro Kishida of Durarara!! will design the characters, and Yuko Yahiro of Kuroko’s Basketball rejoins Takahiro Chiba of Psycho-Pass as chief animation director. Meanwhile, Hiromi Kikuta is serving as sound director, and Kiznaiver‘s Yuki Hayashi is composing the music with Asami Tachibana.
The first season of the anime premiered in April 2014 and the second followed in October 2015, reaching the end of its 25-episode run on Sunday (June 12th). Crunchyroll streamed both series as new episodes aired in Japan, and they summarise the show as follows:
Based off of the original Weekly Shonen Jump manga series from Haruichi Furudate, Haikyu!! is a slice-of-life sports anime revolving around Shoyo Hinata’s love of volleyball. Inspired by a small-statured pro volleyball player, Hinata creates a volleyball team in his last year of middle school. Unfortunately the team is matched up against the “King of the Court” Tobio Kageyama’s team in their first tournament and inevitably lose. After the crushing defeat, Hinata vows to surpass Kageyama After entering high school, Hinata joins the volleyball team only to find that Tobio has also joined.
