Questions for Me

1) Why did you Start your Blog in the first place?

I’ve made no secret that my love of anime waned from my adolescent adoration into the hinterlands of teenage pretension, but it was the very act of writing about anime that reintroduced and reaffirmed my respect and appreciation for the medium. I started writing anime reviews for Starburst Magazine, an excellent British publication with an emphasis on all things cult, and even started penning a regular anime column.

During those busy few years, I was predominately a freelance writer, with a few jobs covering my expenses and expanding my portfolio, but the lack of stability and reliable income began to get the better of me. So I sought out something a little more permanent. The result was a full-time journalism job, writing on four to five publications every month. For the first few months, I had to cut back on my freelance workload to fit everything else it, what with moving house and learning to drive all at the same time. Unfortunately, this meant I could no longer write anime reviews.

Despite not writing about anime anymore, Elisabeth (my loving partner and better half of this blog) and I were still cramming in as much anime and manga time as possible. And then it dawned on us. Why not start our own site. The rest, as they say, was history.

2) What is your favourite book?

My favourite book is The Crow Road by the late Iain Banks. I revisit the novel every year or so, with the story feeling almost as different as I do with the passing of time. It’s desperately funny, and full of loss and yearning. It also has perhaps the greatest opening line of any contemporary novel: “It was the day my grandmother exploded.” I mean come on!

3) What do you dislike the most?

Wow, that’s a loaded question. This is the space usually reserved for persecution, bigotry, poverty and the real evils and injustices of the world. On a more personal level I guess I’d point the finger at litter or lad culture.

4) What’s your favourite food item from the mall?

Malls tends to come with different connotations here in Blighty, but I suppose it’s synonymous with the shopping centre. In that case, something encased in pastry of one kind or another or something spicy/

5) What is your favourite past time activity?

It’s evident from the blog that anime is up near the top spot, so aside from point out the obvious, I’ll add cooking, reading, walking, drawing, gaming, the cinema, collecting and writing to the list.

Aw, thank you. It can be a tough workload at times, but it’s always worth it.

      • I feel overwhelmed at times too and don’t end up posting as often as I like. Recently, my main workload is editing medical research papers to be published in journals. So after doing that all day, sitting down to write about something I am passionate about can feel like a “chore” (at times). The take home point though is that despite all your obligations, you are still making time to enjoy life. Keep it up because I absolutely love your posts!

It’s a something we’ve been calling anime fatigue and the term is certainly apt. I know exactly how you feel so you’re never alone in feeling something you love is a charge.

          Thanks again ^^
