Update: Yen Press announce Spice & Wolf sequel stories, international release of Anniversary Edition

As Isuna Hasekura and Ju Ayakura’s Spice & Wolf novels celebrate their 10th anniversary with new stories, Yen Press announced at New York Comic Con that they’re releasing the Spice & Wolf short story collection and sequel novels. Spice & Wolf, Volume 18: Spring Log and the first volume of Spice & Wolf New Theory: Parchment and Wolf will be published in 2017.

Yen Press give the novels the following descriptions:

Spice and Wolf, Volume 18: Spring Log — A collection of short stories originally serialized in Dengeki Bunko Magazine, these tales revisit the world of Lawrence and Holo in celebration of the series’ tenth anniversary.

Spice and Wolf New Theory: Parchment and Wolf, Volume 1 — The beginning of a new adventure! Featuring Myuri, Lawrence and Holo’s daughter, the world of Spice and Wolf opens anew!

Kurt Hassler, Managing Director and Publisher at Yen Press, announced on the same panel that all 17 volumes of the original Spice & Wolf are being made available digitally in English for the first time. The publishers plan to release the full run as eBooks soon.

Yen Press also recently announced a limited edition print run of the whole light novel series in one volume. Such was the demand for the Spice & Wolf Collector’s Anniversary Edition that a second print run was commissioned. But still, fans outside North America found themselves sorely disappointed, as retailers in other territories like the UK were unable to fulfil their orders.

This was a particular shame because the original print run was hand-numbered, and readers lost out on their chance to own one of these copies due to fumbled rights agreements. While numbered editions are now out of print, Yen Press have explained the situation, and are now appeasing customers by securing global rights to the volume. Everyone outside the US who couldn’t get a copy will now be able to order theirs for shipping in December.

If you think you might get a copy as an early Christmas gift to yourself (or someone else, if you’re very generous) here’s a little more info on what the Spice and Wolf Collector’s Anniversary Edition includes:

To commemorate this anniversary, Yen Press is producing a special, limited and numbered collector’s edition omnibus collecting all seventeen original volumes of Spice and Wolf in one lavish tome. Beautifully bound and impressively designed to give the impression of a medieval manuscript, the book will also include all of illustrator Jyuu Ayakura’s original illustrations. This book will be the crown jewel in any collector’s library!

The light novel series’ story centers around the travels of the merchant Kraft Lawrence, who strikes a deal with the wolf god Holo that sees him transporting the homesick goddess back to her remote northern homeland. Uniquely exploring medieval trade, commerce, and religion, Lawrence plies his trade with Holo (in both human and wolf form) often becoming a decisive factor in his endeavors, but in the end, it is the story of these two memorable characters and their relationship to one another.

It sounds like a thing of beauty, well worth owning if you love this equally beautiful series. A ribbon can’t quite match up to a numbered edition, we know. But these mistakes happen, and we’re glad they’ll be getting to international customers eventually.

Good to see more of the books get localized and even become available digitally. You didn’t have to be a wise wolf to know that light novels would be popular in the west.
