Stan Lee and Studio DEEN join forces for The Reflection

Ready for some news we didn’t need super vision to see coming? Stan Lee is getting on board the anime train with his production company POW! Entertainment, teaming up with Studio DEEN for a superhero themed animated short. At 30 minutes in length, the project is titled The Reflection, and is set for a worldwide 2017 release as you can see from the poster below.

The story takes place after a calamity where Earth was struck by strange rays of light. The mysterious beams killed many, but granted certain survivors with superhuman abilities. The official English synopsis of The Reflection is as follows:

After THE REFLECTION, some of the people in all parts of the world are discovered with super powers.

Some become heroes, and others villains.

How did the Reflection happen? What was the cause of it?

With many unsolved mysteries, the world is lead into turmoil.

The promo video above, featuring music produced by Trevor Horn, announced the project’s staff including:

Original work by Stan Lee and Mushishi‘s Hiroshi Nagahama
Directed and original characters by Hiroshi Nagahama
Character design by Yoshihiko Umakoshi
Theme song performance by 9nine
Animation production by Studio Deen

A second video was also released, in which Stan Lee himself introduces the Reflection phenomena, and what it means for the future of mankind.

By the looks of it, this project’s a natural progression from the international acclaim of My Hero Academia, and how Attack on Titan united eastern and western artists for the Attack on Titan Anthology and beyond. But will it be bold enough to make an original mark on this banner of fandom? It’s hard to tell from these two short promos, but we have high hopes.

  1. I definitely did not see this one coming, but it is nice to know that Stan Lee is now also getting into some Anime. I have nothing but respect for the guy. To be at the age he is currently at, and still be that active…wow 😀

Yeah, he’s pretty incredible, just keeps on going! I had a feeling he might get involved in a project like this at some point, comics and manga are crossing over more and more and he seems to keep his finger on the pulse. It does make me wonder what anime he likes, if any, or whether he’s just interested in playing with the medium.

  2. Just hearing anything narrated by Stan Lee just makes me smile. This thing certainly has me a bit surprised and certainly taken aback that it is actually happening, but Boku no Hero Academia was a complete nod to Western superhero culture so why not, right? It will be interesting to see what a collaboration of the director of Mushishi and one of comics biggest icons can truly do, and as much as I have my reservations for this project, I honestly can’t wait to see it come out.

Me too, he sounds like your fun granddaddy who has heaps of wisdom to share. Why not indeed, and I’m very curious to see how this turns out too.
