Gintama is drawing swiftly to its close, Bleach has reaped its last, KochiKame has ended after a 40-year run, and now another of the Shonen Jump old guard is due to publish its last chapter. Mitsutoshi Shimabukuro’s gourmet battle manga Toriko will see its “climax” go to print on November 14th, as an expanded “full course” edition chapter 31 pages long.
Shimabukuro launched the series in Weekly Shonen Jump in 2008, its 41st volume the latest released on October 4th. VIZ Media runs a simul-publication of the manga in its English edition of Jump, and published its 35th volume on August 2nd. Viz describe the manga’s story as follows:
In a savage world ruled by the pursuit of the most delicious foods, it’s either eat or be eaten!
Gourmet Hunter Toriko! This is the great era of gourmet food! And only Toriko can hunt down the ferocious ingredients that supply the world’s best restaurants. As a gourmet hunter, Toriko tracks and defeats the tastiest and most dangerous animals with his bare hands.
Gintama creator Hideaki Sorachi has sketched out his thoughts on the bittersweet situation at Jump. It’s a perfect little illustration of the chuckle of nostalgia being shared by generations of artists and readers alike right now.
