Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju slates date for 2nd season

Yotaro up there is happy because, at last, we have a premiere date for the return of Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju. Word on its sequel season went silent in August, but now it’s official that Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju: Sukeroku Futatabi-hen (Sukeroku Anew Arc) will begin on January 6th, as announced on the anime’s website.

We were gripped by the tragic history of Kikuhiko and Sukeroku (whose beloved rakugo traditions and transformations we explored for ourselves), but it seems their story isn’t quite over yet. Akira Ishida and Koichi Yamadera have both been confirmed as reprising their respective roles, as the second season moves into the modern era.

Haruko Kumota’s original manga launched in Kodansha’s ITAN magazine in March 2010, and ended in June this year. Crunchyroll streamed the first season of the Studio DEEN anime, directed by Mamoru Hatakeyama of Sankarea: Undying Love. The streaming service gave its story the following synopsis:

Upon his release from prison, a man seeks out the famous comedic storyteller Yakumo after falling in love with his rendition of a story called “Shinigami.” Yakumo accepts the ex-convict as his apprentice, nicknaming him “Yotaro.” As Yotaro gets acclimated to his new life, he meets Konatsu, a girl in the care of Yakumo who wants to become a performer as well, but is unable to because she is a woman.
