We’ve often thought back to the slick supernatural battles of Blood Blockade Battlefront since we reviewed it for the blog, so we were happy to see this news. Plans for a new series, Blood Blockade Battlefront & Beyond, have recently been spotted by fans over in Japan. The anime has also been confirmed as returning in 2017.
This sequel season to the anime adapted from Trigun creator Yasuhiro Nightow’s manga will be undergoing some remodeling in terms of staff. Shigehito Takayanagi, known for his work on Dagashi Kashi and Galaxy Angel among others, will be taking over from Rie Matsumoto as director for a start. Furthermore, Dagashi Kashi‘s Yasuko Kamo will be writing scripts instead of Kazunao Furuya. Toshihiro Kawamoto will be back as character designer and animation director though, beside Taisei Iwasaki composing music. All the main cast from the last anime will be back in their old roles too.
Nightow launched the original manga in Jump SQ.19 magazine in February 2009. After this run ended in April 2009, it moved over to Jump Square where it was relaunched as Blood Blockade Battlefront Back 2 Back in 2015. Dark Horse publish the series in English. When they were asked about the missing three English volumes this summer, they stated that they were negotiating with Shueisha for the rights to the remaining compilations.
