Gangsta. author Kohske is back with a prequel to her hit neo-noir manga, one which explores the dark and often violent pasts of the characters we came to know in the original. Gangsta: Cursed., with a story by Kohske and artwork by Syuhei Kamo, is being released in English by VIZ Media on December 20th. So hold on Handymen, and get your guns loaded for another run with the Twilights.

Kamo became a mangaka in her own right with this series, starting out in her professional career on Gangsta. as an assistant to Kohske. Gangsta: Cursed. is her first writer’s credit, its story described by Viz as follows:

In Gangsta: Cursed., killing is all Spas has ever known, and he does it without doubt or remorse. Taught to believe he’s ridding the world of monsters, he sees the extermination of the Twilights as a necessary step toward making Ergastulum a safer place. Until the day when he’s forced to confront the horrifying truth that the real monster might be…him.

Before her repeated New York Times bestseller, Kohske made her debut in 2009 with the short story ‘Postman’, which appeared in Square Enix’s Shonen GanGan magazine. Gangsta., her first full series, launched in Shinchosa’s Monthly Comic Bunch in 2011, and inspired the summer 2015 anime. It would be studio Manglobe’s last project before they filed for bankruptcy, but, dare we say, they couldn’t have gone out with more finesse. We only wish they could have stayed with Gangsta. long enough to give it a more satisfying ending.

Unless you read a news about the manga going on an indefinite hiatus, Gangsta. is still on-going, is just that Kohske health doesn’t allow her to continue her work for now. As for Cursed, the french version already have two volumes published and I quite enjoy it so far. Make me like Marco/Spas more.

Yeah I was aware of that, yet another brilliant mangaka who’s worked themselves to exhaustion. I was talking more about the anime, I wonder if it ever will be picked up by another studio. Maybe it could do a Bungo Stray Dogs sort of thing and have a prequel season under somebody new.

That would be great if an other studio decide to take over. As long as that new studio doesn’t mess up the character design and the story like Artland did when they produce the 2nd season of Gunslinger Girls, I’m okay with it. But it’s gonna be hard since the manga series itself is on hiatus. They might go with fillers episode with I’m not always a fan of.

That’s true. Maybe it is best if the anime is left alone for a good while, to hopefully give Kohske a chance to get well and start up the manga again.
