A mysterious gathering of tanuki occurred in the forest of Tadasu on Thursday. Those present at the Shimogamo Shrine came away with new knowledge about P.A. Works’ Eccentric Family 2 sequel anime. New and returning cast, theme song performers and staff were revealed, along with the new visual below.

At another Eccentric Family event held at the Kyoto International Manga Anime Fair in September, it was already revealed that the main cast would return to their familiar roles. And so, with the whole Shimogamo family and Benten back in place, the full list of returning cast is now as follows:

Yuichi Nakamura (Fairy Tail‘s Gray Fullbuster) as Kureichiro Ebisugawa

Bin Shimada (Gintama‘s Gengai Hiraga) as Tenmanya

Following these announcements, the anime’s official website updated with its first trailer, and there’s now an English-subtitled version streaming from the show’s official English Facebook. The video introduces the new cast in their roles, as well as welcoming back the family we already know and love.

Also returning to the show are milktub and fhána, to perform the new anime’s theme songs. milktub will perform the opening theme song ‘Nasugamama, Sawagumama’, and fhána will perform the ending theme ‘Moon River’.

This will be P.A. Works’ first ever sequel series, and Yoshihara is returning from the first series to direct. Koji Kumeta, also of Sayonara, Zetsubo-sensei, is back on character design, and music production will be handled by Lantis. Kosuke Kawazura will adapt Kumeta’s character designs for animation, while acting as animation director, and Yusuke Takeda and Harumi Okamoto are on board as art directors. Newly added staff include returning writer Ryou Higaki, with Yoshiaki Fujisawa back composing music.

The 2013 anime series was adapted from the 2007 novel of the same name by Morimi, also the author of The Tatami Galaxy. The Kyoto-set comedy drama was streamed by Crunchyroll, and they give the series the following description:

In Kyoto, humans, tanuki, and tengu live side-by-side. The Shimogamo family lives in Shimogamo Jinja’s Tadasu no Mori. The father, Soichiro, used to be the head of tanuki society, but without warning one day he was made into tanuki stew, and no one knows how it happened. He left four sons behind. They all live happily with their mother. After taking care of Professor Akadama, the Shimogamo family suddenly finds itself in a desperate fix. Will the truth behind how their father got stewed be revealed?! What does fate have in store for this strongly bonded family?!

As the new series was announced, Morimi shared the following statement:

‘Once again, I have written another novel difficult to visualise.’

This was my thought when I finished writing the sequel. As a clumsy writer, I have lost my proper consideration for the production staff and could not withhold my wild fantasies. When I reflect upon the countless obstacles that everyone in the production staff will be facing, I am in endless remorse. Please, forgive this rambunctious author. This is an abbreviated formality, but with this comment, I hereby express my apologies, and offer my prayer for the birth of a masterpiece greater than the first season.

Yoshihara added, “The highlight of Uchoten Kazoku 2 is the attractive new characters. Please watch and read the first season, and then enjoy this new world to the fullest.”
