Real figure skaters bring the dances of Yuri!!! on ICE to life

In a wonderful display of fandom at its best, Yuri!!! on ICE has been recognised and loved by professional figure skaters from across the world, surely no less by the show’s choreographer Kenji Miyamoto. Pros and amateurs alike would obviously want to pay their respects to the show by incorporating its music and moves into their own skating, but what’s happened here is a whole new level of fanart.

There are now several real-life recreations of Yuri Katsuki’s ‘Eros’, but this one by Joel Minas is a thing of grace and beauty. He has also posted his own version of Yuri Plisetsky’s ‘Agape’.

Here’s another ‘Eros’ from a skater named Patton Chen. This performance comes with side-by-side comparisons to the anime, so you can see the skill involved in enacting these dances, filling in the gaps from the shifting angles and audience shots in the animated renditions.

Of course, you couldn’t have these fan-skates of Yuri!!! on ICE without a crack at ‘History Makers’. Chen did a side-by-side comparison video of this one too, but here is a duet from Diane Zhou and Sabina Chen, who filmed their version to celebrate the series finale.

While we’re at it, how about a tribute from the choreographer? As Kenji Miyamoto is used to putting together dances both for himself and other Olympic-level skaters, he would know how all of his programs for the anime would work on the ice. But to prove it, here’s a behind-the-scenes video for Victor Nikiforov’s ‘Stay Close to Me’.

All of this makes us want to learn to skate too, but would probably be best for everyone if we left it to the professionals. Wouldn’t it be exciting to see someone skating their own ‘Yuri on Ice’ at a future Winter Olympics? It makes us wonder how much of the next generation of skaters will have been inspired by the Yuris, Victor and their friends in the years to come.
