Singer and voice actor Azusa Tadokoro, known for roles in Tokyo ESP and Myriad Colours Phantom World, announced on Sunday that she is performing the theme song ‘Dearest Drop’ for the April-airing SukaSuka anime. She also announced that she will be voicing the main character Kutori, who can be seen on the cover of the original light novel series’ first volume, as well as in the visual below.
This adaptation of Akira Kareno and ue’s Shumatsu Nani Shitemasu ka? Isogashii Desu ka? Sukutte Moratte Ii Desu ka? (What do you do at the end of the world? Are you busy? Will you save us?) light novel series is making quite an unusual move, and looking to actually cast a child in a young role. Audition staff say their ideal applicants will be girls between first and fourth grade. The judges leading the auditions are also members of the show’s staff, and they have been named as follows:
Director Jun’ichi Wada (The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-chan)
Sound director Satoshi Motoyama (Seiyu’s Life!, Urara Meirocho)
Producer Atsushi Itou (Tokyo ESP, The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya)
Original writer Kareno has also been added to the staff, and confirmed to be in charge of series composition. Toru Imanishi of Ragnastrike Angels is designing the characters for the anime.
It’s often the case that adult voice actresses make themselves sound girlish for young female roles in anime, but there have been certain exceptions such as Sweetness and Lightning and the 3D film Maya the Bee. The young actors in both were students of the YOU Voice Actors Studio, who exclusively train up kids for future voice acting careers. The child actor selected in these auditions must not be signed to a talent agency, as they will receive a scholarship to YOU from its parent agency Production Ace. The company will host the auditions in Tokyo on February 12th.
In June last year, bookstore displays across Japan announced that the light novels known in short as SukaSuka would be getting an anime adaptation. This title is set prior to Kareno and ue’s most recent series Shumatsu Nani Shitemasu ka? Mou Ichido dake, Aemasu ka? (Do you have what THE END? May I meet you once again?) or SukaMoka, whose first volume was released in April 2016, while the second was released the day of the anime announcement.
The duo launched SukaSuka in 2014, publishing the fifth and final volume in April 2016. Here’s the story synopsis for the straight-up romance (no ecchi, no harem) series:
Five hundred years have passed since humanity went extinct at the hands of the fearsome “beasts.” Even up in the sky, where the surviving races dwell on floating islands, these monstrosities constantly threaten to bring death and destruction. Only a small group of young girls, the Leprechauns, can wield the ancient weapons needed to defeat these creatures. Into the girls’ unstable and fleeting lives, where a call to certain death could come at any moment, enters an unlikely character: a young man who lost everything five hundred years ago, the last living human awakened from a long, icy slumber.
