The look of love: anime’s wonderful couples

Valentine’s Day may seem meant for two, but we think it should be a day of gratitude to everyone we love. So we thought we’d celebrate not only romance, but friendship, family and recovery from loss in our list of lovely anime couples. However you’re celebrating today, make it one for love, even if it’s just showing a little appreciation for the people who’ve been there for you.

Takeo Goda and Rinko Yamato – My Love Story!!

This pair of sweetie-pies show us that love should not be restricted to what’s expected of us, or where our attainable ‘level’ of partner sexiness lies. In fact, they fulfil each other because they bring out the unexpected in one another. Takeo can feel beautiful and heroic for the first time in his life, and with him Rinko can be stronger in their deceptively soft, white-lit world.

Yakumo and Sukeroku – Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju

At first we were inclined to think it an injustice that these beautiful men never became a ‘true’ couple, but in hindsight that’s what gives their romance its stinging edge. They are each prisoners to their time, in their storytelling and society. Instead, it’s the voices they bring to their stories, and the way they are intertwined and survived through the two, that carry the otherwise unspeakable depths of their love.

Naruto and Hinata – Naruto

Come on, we couldn’t not. When we first saw Hinata, barely there but for her admiration of Naruto, we wanted her to get brave so she could tell him one day. But she grew to be much more than that; our Hinata is a defender to the most narcissistic ninja around. Now they’re married with their own little boy, and in such obvious bliss in each other’s company that the love in their eyes after all their suffering is wondrous to see.

Myoe and Koto – Kyousougiga

The best, most rewarding loves are the ones where you create your own world together – something high priest Myoe learns after his drawing of a rabbit comes to life. Creator, instigator and the needing dreamer come together, each ostracised from daily life until they find each other. We might see the start and tragic end of their love within one episode, but it brings us courage to find they survive through their family, even across dimensions.

Kaoru and Ritsuko – Kids on the Slope

You can keep Your lie in April – this is the only musical teen romance we need. Though sharing a genius pianist in Kaoru, this love is brave enough to play the long game, twisting like a jazz number through the surging feelings of youth, then settling into the one you’ve known all along. Heavy on the heart though lightened by 60s swing, you’re dragged through the humiliation and misunderstandings, and somehow spat out the other end content. Growing up in a nutshell.

Aren’t they all adorable? And in their own unique ways, all part of what makes our loves so special. Which is your favourite anime couple, and what lessons and guidance of theirs have stayed with you? Which characters remind you of people you love? Let us know!

  1. Great post (but honestly when are your posts not great lol). Anyway, to answer your question: I actually have two favorite couples.
Couple number one is Naho and Kakeru from Orange. Naho is a character I can relate to a lot. Because a lot of things she does, I have done myself as well. In the end though it shows what someone is willing to sacrifice in order to obtain true love, and how valuable true friends really are
Couple number two is Kirito and Asuna from Sword Art Online. There is just something about their chemistry onscreen that I have always loved. And it also lets us see, that no matter what, you should never give up on the one you truly love 😊

Thank you! And those are both sweet choices, it’s so cool that the characters we love can teach us such valuable lessons through their own loves ❤️

  2. I wouldn’t really consider Yakumo and Sukeroku a couple, especially because Sukeroku has no interest and Yakumo seems to be asexual or sexually undecided more than anything. Great list otherwise (especially Kids on the Slope, that show deserves more attention)!
