Any Stranger Things fans out there? With the hype in for the long haul, as season two of The Duffer Brothers’ Netflix sensation is slated for October, The Daily Beast caught up with the duo to discuss the show’s early production process, including its anime inspirations. Now, the canny among you will have picked up on the otaku nods already, but it’s still pretty cool to hear this particular anime mentioned.

Getting onto the topic of the show’s connections to Akira, Matt Duffer was quick to give credit to another psycho-thriller – Elfen Lied, the TV adaptation of Lynn Okamoto’s mutant manga. Here’s what the creator/director had to say:

But then weirdly it’s like, I haven’t seen [Akira] for a long time. More recently I had seen an anime called Elfen Lied that is clearly inspired by Akira. And that was really influential. When I watched it I thought it felt like an ultraviolent E.T. There were a lot of things in there that I really liked and that made their way into the show, particularly related to the character of Eleven.

So, that certainly tags an origin to Eleven’s murderous telekinesis. It’s doubtful there will be any direct references to anime while the show is set in 80s America, but we’re hopeful that maybe, in future series, we’ll actually start to hear Akira and its contemporaries mentioned.

I am a huuuuuuuuugeeeeeee Stranger Things fan. I have heard a lot about Elfen Lied, but have never actually seen it. After reading this though , I plan to change that fact. Thank you for sharing this 😀

Glad to hear it, it’s definitely worth the watch. There’s more depth and complexity to it than the memes give it credit for.

Elfen Lied is one of my favorite anime. Although gory, it has some really beautiful moments, especially the opening. I am glad to hear that it has inspired others to make art!

The funny thing was, I have never seen Elfen Lied, but I caught the reference fairly quickly…
