Update: A Certain Magical Index producer asks fans to wait for season 3

After asking fans to “please wait” for a new A Certain Magical Index season last spring, Kazuma Miki, anime producer and former editor of the Index light novels, is back to assure us that plans are still in the works. Last weekend’s Dengeki Game Festival saw its usual New Work Announcement panel buzzing over the Toaru Majutsu no Virtual-On game, a collaboration between Kazuma Kamachi’s light novels and Sega’s Virtual-On robot-fighting series. But before the attended had chance to be disappointed about the lack of a Certain Magical Index 3 announcement, Miki dropped the request to “please wait a little longer for season 3!”

The ex-Dengeki Bunko editor-in-chief previously told his Twitter followers that a new season of A Certain Magical Index might just happen. He posted on his official account in April saying, “Please understand that this is an unofficial statement. I am always receiving everyone’s passionate opinions on this. Index anime [season 3] is plausible, so please wait!!”

After leaving his position at Kadokawa’s Dengeki Bunko last March, Miki set up his new company Straight Edge, which among other writers has a contract with Index‘s author Kamachi. He runs it alongside Kazutomo Suzuki, executive manager at Kadokawa’s ASCII Media Works, and their company’s goal is to manage talent as well as producing new publications and animation.

The first series Miki produced adapting Kamachi’s light novels premiered in 2008. This was followed up by a second season in 2010, then the Miracle of Endymion anime film in 2013. The first series’ success gave Motoi Fuyukawa’s spin-off manga A Certain Scientific Railgun a chance for the anime treatment, and Misaka Mikoto proved just as popular in her 2009 starring role, so a second season titled A Certain Scientific Railgun S aired in 2013.

Seven Seas publish the A Certain Scientific Railgun and A Certain Scientific Accelerator manga in North America. Meanwhile, Yen Press publish the main light novel series, and they summarise its story:

A certain unlikely hero…

Touma Kamijou has the worst luck imaginable… Sure he’s a citizen of Academy City, a scientific marvel of the modern world where superhuman abilities are artificially cultivated and commonplace, but when it comes to paranormal talent, Kamijou’s been classified a Level Zero-a loser, basically. Oh, he does have one trick up his sleeve (literally), but even that’s more trouble than it’s worth.

When Kamijou encounters a delusional young girl convinced she’s a nun and raving about being chased by evil sorcerers, he’s eager to send her on her way and get back to failing his studies. Fate, it would seem though, has other ideas, and he suddenly finds himself caught up in a supernatural intrigue with a girl named “Index” at the center!

Science and magic collide in this first volume of one of the most popular light novel series ever penned!
