Production I.G produced Ultraman anime unveiled

A countdown to a “major announcement” for the Ultraman manga came to fruition today, and it’s certainly major. Eiichi Shimizu and Tomohiro Shimoguchi’s series is getting its own anime, but there’s also a major downside – we’ll have to wait till 2019 to see it.

Not to worry though, as the staff announcements made at Tokyo Comic Con give us hope that it will be worth the wait. Kenji Kamiyama of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and Shinji Aramaki of Appleseed were introduced as the project’s directors. Further to that, Ghost in the Shell studio Production I.G is working with Sola Digital Arts of Appleseed Alpha on 3D CG production. The promo video below was also revealed during the announcement.

Viz Media publish the manga in North America. It’s available elsewhere, including the UK, digitally via comiXology. Viz describe the story as follows:

Decades ago, a being known as the Giant of Light joined Shin Hayata of the Scientific Special Search Party to save Earth from an invasion of terrifying monsters known as Kaiju. Now, many years later, those dark days are fading into memory, and the world is at peace. But in the shadows a new threat is growing, a danger that can only be faced by a new kind of hero – a new kind of Ultraman…

Shinjiro is an ordinary teenager, but his father is the legendary Shin Hayata. When he learns that his father passed on the “Ultraman Factor” to him, and that he possesses incredible powers, nothing will ever be the same again.

The manga is based on Tsuburaya Production’s famous live-action special effects hero, and was launched in Shogakukan’s Monthly Hero’s magazine in 2011. Shogakukan published its 10th compiled volume on July 5th, and Viz have the same volume scheduled to ship overseas on May 18th.
