Dragon Ball creator reveals what makes a Saiyan go Super

Dragon Ball mastermind Akira Toriyama has revealed that certain specs must be in place if any Saiyan hopes to become that most vaunted of beings, a Super Saiyan. Specifically, they must have enough “S-Cells”, suggesting a kind of pseudoscientific chemical reaction or symbiosis akin to Star Wars‘ much-maligned midi-chlorians.

When interviewed (via Todd Blankenship @Herms19), Toriyama said “It’s not like anyone can become a Super Saiyan through training and anger”. But when an individual’s S-Cell level is high enough (maybe over 9000?) their anger can trigger an increase in the present cells, causing the spontaneous light show and massive expansion of muscle mass that is definitive of a Super Saiyan.

“Most Saiyans have some S-Cells, although not a great quantity,” Toriyama continued. Goku and Vegeta’s children each inherited their S-Cell levels from their fathers, and therefore possess the potential to go Super. Most of us weeds, on the other hand, do not – no matter how incensed Twitter trolls, our families at Christmas, or that chair leg we just stubbed our toe on make us.

  1. Oh boy. The moment DB goes full science I’m sure that’s the end of it.
