We have sad news today, friends. Michiru Shimada, known for her stunning writing on beloved anime including One Piece and Little Witch Academia, has passed away. Her daughter had the task of making this announcement to the public on Friday, her mother having died at just 58 years of age.
Shimada had a scriptwriting career spanning almost forty years, getting her start on the likes of Urusei Yatsura and Dr. Slump and Arale-chan. By the 1990s she had moved on to renowned series such as Rurouni Kenshin, setting sail on her One Piece writing run in 1999. Most recently, she was being celebrated for her work on the Little Witch Academia series.
On Twitter, Shimada’s daughter thanked fans for their 38 years of support. She gave her all to heartfelt writing on shows that smashed cultural boundaries, and so she will always be in otaku hearts too. Our thoughts are with her daughter, and all her loved ones at this time.
