The live-action TV adaptation of Gengoroh Tagame’s My Brother’s Husband is celebrating Valentine’s Day with a first look at the cast in character. The main visual for the LGBT family drama introduces Estonian ex-sumo wrestler Baruto Kaito as Mike, Maharu Nemoto as Kana, and Ryota Sato as Yaichi.
As you may well be able to spot, the visual recreates the cover of the manga’s first volume, and Tagame shared it on his official Twitter. Unleashing all of his built up excitement, he said “I was shocked when I saw Maharu Nemoto-san’s audition photo, she looks exactly like Kana!” The author was particularly pleased with Sato’s impression of Yaichi, and commented “Baruto-san whom I met at the set looked very nice with his beard”. We can’t argue there.
Nemoto previously performed in Your lie in April as the voice of young Kaori Miyazono, while Sato is now known for his role as Maes Hughes in the live-action Fullmetal Alchemist movie. In addition, Yuri Nakamura will portray Yaichi’s ex-wife Natsuki in the three-episode mini-series, set to premiere in Japan on March 4th.
Pantheon Books are releasing the manga in two-in-one omnibus volumes for English readers, and they describe the story as follows:
My Brother’s Husband is a family drama that begins with the auspicious arrival of Mike, a Canadian who has come to pay respects to the family of his recently deceased Japanese husband Ryoji, whose only remaining immediate family member is Yaichi – an identical twin brother. As Mike gets accustomed to Japanese mores and the surprising idiosyncrasies of living with Yaichi and his daughter Kana, the sleepy Japanese suburb also learns the true meaning of family.
