Come for the title, stay for the street gangs and New York sunsets, as Banana Fish receives its first trailer and cast announcements. The studio MAPPA anime based on Akimi Yoshida’s manga is heading for its premiere in July, with Amazon Prime streaming the series inside and outside of Japan. If you want that first gorgeous, gritty, glamorous look at the show, check out the promo video below.
Now, for the cast. The four key characters and their voice actors have been announced as follows:
Yuma Uchida (ReLIFE’s Kazuomi Oga) as Ash Lynx
Kenji Nojima (Psycho-Pass’ Nobuchika Ginoza) as Eiji Okumura
Hiroaki Hirata (One Piece’s Sanji) as Max Lobo
Unsho Ishizuka (Cowboy Bebop’s Jet) as Dino Golzine
Hiroko Utsumi comes from working on Kyoto Animation’s Free! to direct, saying that she was drawn to Ash and Eiji’s relationship in the manga. So here’s hoping that lusty dynamic between the two comes front and centre for the anime, as it does in Yoshida’s original story.
One thing that will be different, however, is the time period, pushing forward from the 1980s to modern-day New York. Besides that, the anime will run for 24 episodes, to honour the manga’s full run and see the action through to the end.
Further staff include Kouji Seko of Mob Psycho 100 on series composition, and Akemi Hayashi of Fruits Basket in charge of character design. In addition, Akitsugu Hisagi, a key animator on Kids on the Slope and Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd GIG, acts as the show’s “hard-boiled supervisor”.
Viz Media publish the manga in English, and describe the story:
Vice City: New York in the 80s… Nature made Ash Lynx beautiful; nurture made him a cold ruthless killer. A child runaway brought up as the adopted heir, hatchet man, and sex toy of “Papa” Dino Golzine, the East Coast’s Corsican crime lord, Ash is now at the rebellious age of seventeen – forsaking the kingdom of power and riches held out by the devil who raised him, preferring a code he can live with among a small but loyal gang of street thugs. But his “Papa” can’t simply let him go – not when the hideous secret that drove Ash’s older brother mad in Vietnam has suddenly fallen into his insatiably ambitious hands.
It’s exactly the wrong time for Eiji Okamura, a pure-hearted young photographer from Japan, to arrive in NYC and make Ash Lynx’s acquaintance… and fall with him into the bloody whirlpool of pride, greed, lust and wrath unleashed by the enigma code-named Banana Fish…
