We have news that will be music to the ears of many an otaku: Ghost in the Shell director Mamoru Oshii is working on a new sci-fi anime project. Though there are no details yet on whether this will be a series, a movie or otherwise, the anime will adapt Chimera, a series of novels by Baku Yumemakura.
In the novels, a young man named Kou Ohtori grapples with the weird reality opened up to him when he finds that a monster lives within his skin. The series has been In publication since 1982, coming from the same era as Masamune Shirow’s Ghost in the Shell manga, and with quite similar thematic possibilities as to what it means to be human.
Chimera sounds like a very Oshii proposition, so we’ll be looking forward to seeing where he takes the story. You can be sure to hear further details about the anime from us as they arise. But for now, this beast remains shrouded in mystery.
