Guy Ritchie’s live-action Aladdin had a good run, but Makoto Shinkai’s Weathering With You has finally taken first place in Japan’s box-office earnings race for this year. The world-renowned director’s latest outing since Your name has 12.1 billion yen in its coffers as of September 8th, after 52 days since its July 19th 2019 release.
This means Weathering With You (or Tenki no Ko) is now the sixth top-grossing Japanese animated film of all time, surpassing Hayao Miyazaki’s The Wind Rises of 2013. Shinkai said of his achievement:
I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to the fact that so many people have seen ‘Weathering With You.’ The screenings will continue even after the summer vacation is ended, so I would be very happy if the choices and actions of the protagonist boy and girl will become one of your daily topics.
Humble as ever, we see. Good old Makoto Shinkai.
